Common questions

How do I write a number in words?

Break the number into groups of three digits from the right. Read each group as hundreds, tens and ones, then add its scale name — thousand, million, billion and so on. This tool does that automatically for any number you type in.

Why do banks ask for an amount in words on a cheque?

Words are harder to alter than digits. A cheque that shows both the numeral and the words in full protects against a single digit being changed after you sign it.

What is the largest number this converter can spell out?

It supports numbers up to 66 digits long, well into the vigintillions, along with negative numbers and up to six decimal places.

Can I get the amount in a specific currency?

Yes. Switch the currency selector to USD, EUR, GBP, INR or AED and the tool will add the correct major and minor unit names, such as "Dollars and Cents" or "Rupees and Paise."

Does every number have its own page?

Yes. Every number you convert gets a permanent, shareable page at /number-to-words/ followed by the number, so you can link or bookmark the exact result.
